The UK does not need constant bright sunshine for solar PV to work. Panels generate electricity from light, although output differs greatly by season and weather.
Cloud changes output
Overcast days usually mean less generation than bright sunny days, but not necessarily zero. Shade from chimneys or trees can matter alongside the weather.
Winter is different
Shorter days and a lower sun angle mean winter generation is usually much lower than summer production. A household planning solar to support a winter heat pump should take that mismatch seriously.
What a quote should show
Ask for a location-specific generation estimate with your roof direction, pitch, shade and system size. A glossy image of panels is not a forecast.
Whole-year thinking
Solar should be assessed over a year, alongside household use and any export payments. Avoid claims that panels will power a home independently in every season.
Reliable information
