You don't need Mediterranean sunshine for solar panels to produce electricity. Solar PV can generate power in daylight even when the sky is overcast. But the amount depends heavily on the roof and how much of the electricity your home uses.
Roof direction and shade
South-facing roofs often give strong annual performance in the UK, but east- and west-facing roofs can also be useful. Nearby trees, chimneys and neighbouring buildings can cast shade, so a considered survey is important.
Property styles and roof space
Solar can be considered for bungalows, semi-detached houses, detached properties and some terraces. Roof size, shape, condition and ownership affect what's suitable, and planning considerations may apply in certain locations.
Using the electricity you generate
Solar electricity is particularly helpful when appliances use power during daylight hours. A battery can help shift some of that power into the evening, although whether it makes financial sense depends on individual usage, costs and tariffs.
What about exporting to the grid?
Some households can receive payment for eligible exported electricity through arrangements such as the Smart Export Guarantee. Rates and participation vary by supplier, so compare current options rather than assuming one fixed payment.
