Heat loss, insulation and heat pumps: the connection
Clear, independent-minded guidance

Written for UK homeowners and checked against official or established independent sources where applicable. It is general information, not a substitute for a property assessment.

Insulation and heat pumps are often talked about together, but there is no single insulation checklist that every property must pass. What matters is an accurate calculation of how much heat the home loses.

What heat loss means

Heat escapes through walls, roofs, floors, windows and ventilation. The rate changes with the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors. A designer uses this to size the heating system.

Every property has its own weak spots

A draughty terrace may need very different improvements from a well-insulated semi. Loft top-ups, sealing unwanted draughts or replacing inadequate radiators might be sensible depending on the building.

Bigger is not always better

Oversizing equipment can create its own efficiency and operating issues. Better to design around a defensible heat-loss figure than a rough guess based only on floor area.

Ask for a room-by-room assessment

An EPC is a useful starting point but not a detailed heat pump design. Understand which measurements and assumptions your installer used.

Reliable information

These are general UK homeowner considerations, not a quote, technical design or funding decision. For current rules, see the official or independent guidance for this topic. The right answer depends on your property and the latest scheme conditions.
