A heat pump can supply much more heat than the electricity it consumes, but electricity usually costs more per unit than gas on many standard UK tariffs. It would be misleading to promise every household lower bills.
Compare useful heat, not just unit prices
A gas boiler loses some heat when burning fuel. A heat pump transfers environmental heat using electricity. A fair comparison calculates the amount of useful heating delivered, the system’s seasonal efficiency and the price paid for each fuel.
Your house changes the answer
Good sizing, emitters, insulation, controls and weather compensation can affect efficiency. Two identical-looking houses can have very different heating bills because their usage and heat loss differ.
Tariffs can make a difference
Some households use time-of-use electricity tariffs or specialist heat pump tariffs. These can change the economics, but tariff rules and standing charges should be checked carefully.
Ask for personalised estimates
Before signing, request transparent assumptions about annual heat demand, proposed efficiency, electricity prices and any remaining gas standing charges. Review the result against your actual bills.
