What do British homeowners really think about heat pumps?

Government survey data shows enthusiasm, concern and a lot of uncertainty.

What do British homeowners really think about heat pumps?
Clear, independent-minded guidance

Written for UK homeowners and checked against official or established independent sources where applicable. It is general information, not a substitute for a property assessment.

It would be misleading to say everyone in Britain is excited about heat pumps, or that everyone rejects them. The government’s Spring 2026 Public Attitudes Tracker gives a more balanced picture.

Awareness has grown

In Spring 2026, 78% of people said they were aware of air-source heat pumps. Awareness is not the same as confidence in installation costs, performance or ease of use.

Interest and reluctance both exist

Among owner-occupiers, 26% said they already had or were likely to install an air-source heat pump. At the same time, 46% said they were unlikely to install one. These are different response groups and should not be combined into a single endorsement.

Home energy costs worry people

The same survey found 55% of respondents were worried about energy bills. It is understandable that an expensive heating decision prompts questions about running costs and risk.

A better way to discuss heating

Good installers should answer difficult questions: noise, winter performance, existing radiators, the upfront amount after any grant and what happens if the heating needs servicing. Honest explanations help more than aggressive sales claims.

Reliable information

These are general UK homeowner considerations, not a quote, technical design or funding decision. For current rules, see the official or independent guidance for this topic. The right answer depends on your property and the latest scheme conditions.
