Planning an air-source heat pump for a Bolton home
Bolton households considering low-carbon heating should expect a design-led conversation covering insulation, radiator sizes, hot-water use, electrical supply and the best location for an outdoor unit.
Begin with the building
From compact terraces to larger suburban homes, the heating load can differ substantially. Room-by-room heat-loss calculations help establish whether existing radiators can be retained or whether selected emitters need changing.
Design the whole system
The proposed heat pump, cylinder and controls should be considered as one system. Roof-mounted solar may also be worth discussing, but its contribution depends on roof orientation, shading and when electricity is used.
BUS is open to eligible properties in England and Wales. Current guidance provides £7,500 towards eligible air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps, with a temporary £9,000 category for certain eligible off-gas-grid installations until 31 March 2027. The eligible MCS-certified installer applies and the grant is deducted from the installation price. Eligibility is not guaranteed. Check current Ofgem guidance.
