A PRACTICAL LOCAL STARTING POINT

Planning an air-source heat pump for a Manchester home

Manchester properties range from compact terraces and converted buildings to modern flats and suburban houses. Heat-pump suitability depends on the individual home, ownership arrangements and practical installation space.

Begin with the building

Flats and leasehold homes can involve freeholder consent, communal areas and restrictions on outdoor equipment. Houses may have easier access but still need a proper heat-loss survey and a clear plan for radiators and hot water.

Design the whole system

In denser settings, acoustic assessment and careful outdoor-unit positioning matter. Solar PV for flats may depend on roof ownership and communal decisions, while an individual house can be assessed on its own roof and electrical setup.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

BUS is open to eligible properties in England and Wales. Current guidance provides £7,500 towards eligible air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps, with a temporary £9,000 category for certain eligible off-gas-grid installations until 31 March 2027. The eligible MCS-certified installer applies and the grant is deducted from the installation price. Eligibility is not guaranteed. Check current Ofgem guidance.

MANCHESTER HEAT-PUMP FAQs

Questions worth asking before a quote.

General guidance only. A property assessment and current scheme checks are still required.

Can a Manchester flat have a heat pump?+

Sometimes. Leasehold consent, outdoor space, noise, access and whether services are individual or shared all need checking.

Do heat pumps work in terraced houses?+

They can. The key issues include heat loss, radiator design, hot-water storage, pipe routes and an acceptable outdoor position.

Does BUS cover every Manchester property?+

No. BUS is subject to property, technology, installer and scheme requirements; eligibility is never automatic.
