Planning an air-source heat pump for a Preston home
Preston property owners considering a heat pump should begin with a clear survey of heat demand, emitters, hot water and outdoor space. Off-gas-grid circumstances can also affect the BUS grant category under current rules.
Begin with the building
A detached home, semi or terrace may each offer different routes for pipework and outdoor equipment. The survey should record what is practical rather than assume that a particular house type guarantees suitability.
Design the whole system
If the property is off the gas grid, the existing heating fuel and current BUS conditions need careful verification. Solar and battery storage can be assessed separately around roof potential and electricity-use patterns.
BUS is open to eligible properties in England and Wales. Current guidance provides £7,500 towards eligible air-to-water and ground-source heat pumps, with a temporary £9,000 category for certain eligible off-gas-grid installations until 31 March 2027. The eligible MCS-certified installer applies and the grant is deducted from the installation price. Eligibility is not guaranteed. Check current Ofgem guidance.
